Freelance Book Editor

Ever wish you didn’t have to market your business, network, interview for each job/assignment, negotiate rates and create a contract, manage the communication with your client, create billing, collect the invoice, or not be able to collect the invoice and suffer a loss?

About the Role

We are currently hiring bilingual (French-English) professional freelance editors with significant experience completing standard copy edits, complex copy edits (for ESL authors), developmental edits, substantive edits, proofreads, and editorial evaluations / book reviews / critiques. You are a detail-oriented generalist, comfortable moving between all genres and subject matter. Not much gets past you! During this recruitment round, we are looking for bilingual editors experienced in both fiction and nonfiction, as well as children’s books. Most importantly, you thrive in a position that affords you the privilege to work with authors of varying levels of writing experience as their guide and mentor. You consider yourself a constructive and encouraging—but honest and firm—coach who can present recommendations as actionable and manageable steps in both written and live call formats.

Please note that we are looking for specific experience or credentials that support your application as a professional editor. Please ensure you can confidently check off a few of the below requirements before submitting your application package:

  • You can fluently review texts in both English and French;

  • You have completed an editing certificate (e.g., Simon Fraser Editing Certificate);

  • You possess professional credentials;

  • You have completed a number of stand-alone editing courses;

  • You belong to a recognized editing association;

  • You have a lifelong learning plan in place, or a mentor, that constantly challenges you to learn and improve your skills;

  • You have significant editing-specific work experience that has allowed you to cement skills that would rival any program or certificate.

The first step in our recruitment process at FriesenPress is to complete a two-part exam based on the Editors Canada "Professional Editorial Standards" in English. There will be a copy editing portion of the exam and a structural and stylistic portion administered by a leading EAC standards committee member. You will need to pass both to be eligible for employment with FriesenPress.
